What Is A Hub Motor

 What Is A Hub Motor

The BLDC hub motor is a type of dc motor which operates without any brush or commutator mechanism.
basically, the construction of the hub motor is completely different from the dc motor in the hub motor, the position of the rotor and stator is opposite to the dc motor wherein dc motor, the internal part (core) acts as a rotor and the stator is the outer part of the motor. as shown in the following fig.

the dc motor requires a commutator as well as carbon brushes to regulate a continuous power supply to windings.

but inside the hub motor, the power is supplied to the copper winding through an external driver circuit.

which is known as a controller. hence they are also called bldc hub motors or brushless hub motors.

why it is name a hub motor?

the hub motors are mainly used in the automotive application (two-wheelers mostly) hence their position is incorporated at the hub of the rear wheel.

as you see above fig. a part that holds the rim with spoke at the rear fork is known as a hub

so these are mounted in the place of hub hence they are called hub motors.
